Me, today. 5.24.12. Stress and Stressful

Today had a lot of stresses in it: lack of sleep, back to back meetings, flurry of emails and calls and everyone needing everything right now. Yet it wasn’t particularly stressful. We get a lot of stresses in our lives, but there’s a big difference between stress and stressful. One you can’t control, and one you can choose to control.


Pressure or tension exerted on a material object: “the distribution of stress is uniform across the bar”

Stress is a fact of life – a workout is stress on your body, but it’s not stressful unless you make it. Work is a stress, but it doesn’t have to be stressful.


Causing mental or emotional stress: “corporate finance work can be stressful”.

The big difference? Something that happens, and something that affects you. You can choose your life to have stress or be stressful. The biggest thing you can do to reduce your stress is choose to accept things that happen and let them pass through you instead of hanging on and stressing about it. Just let it go.
